Mexico’ Coffee Overview.

Coffee is a strategic crop in Mexico; coffee is grown in an area of approximately 750 thousand hectares and its production employs more than 515,000 producers from 15 states and about 500 municipalities. Of the total number of producers, at least 310,000 cultivate in small areas of one to three hectares. Eighty-five percent of the producers are indigenous communities and a large part of the crops correspond to organic coffee.

The coffee variety arabica was cultivated for more than 200 years in Mexico and has given Mexico worldwide prestige as a coffee-growing country.

The states of Chiapas, Veracruz, Puebla and Oaxaca are the main producers, accounting for 89.7 percent of total production. Of the four, three have producers and areas that have achieved the recognition of the Appellation of Origin and Geographical Indications.

Mexico is in the Top 10 countries with the highest coffee production in the world with a production of 4.5 million bags of 60 kg each, likewise, Mexico is proudly among the Top 3 countries in the world with the highest volume of organic production of coffee.

In Mexico, more than 90 percent of the coffee produced is Arabica and the remainder is Robusta. The Arabica plant variety grows in the shade, is surrounded by fruit trees and various plant species, while the robust, which requires direct exposure to the sun, does not require accompanying plants, which contributes to deforestation, while the Arabica contributes to sustainable agriculture.

Sourcing with Mexican coffee means to invest in the development of a sustainable coffee culture, promoting the supply of organic products in Mexico and in the world. It means investing in producers with experience in the management of coffee plantations, and the transformation and preservation processes, it means you are investing in quality.

Coffee in Mexico is grown on fincas, communal, and private lands. Obviously, the latter are the most extensive. The ejidatarios have 39 percent of the land, the small owners 35 percent, the comuneros 21 percent, and those of the usufruct type, tenants and indefinite tenure, 4 percent.

Because Mexico enjoys a large territorial extension and a climate conducive to coffee cultivation, it should be noted that the RÉÉ Trade Program offers a great diversity of complex, distinguished and unique coffee profiles. Therefore, green coffee buyers can benefit from our program to locate the type of coffee variety that best suits their market needs.

As an example of the diversity of profiles that can be found in Mexico, on the one hand, in the State of Veracruz, coffee arises from the particular combination of its deep volcanic soils; the climate characterized by its high humidity throughout the year; and its cloudy winters, which, together, specify the high acidity, the intense aroma, the spicy flavor and the appreciable body that characterizes this Mexican coffee.

In the same way, in the State of Chiapas, coffee is grown on volcanic soils, an element that combined with the altitude gives it acidity, intensity, body and fruit notes.

On the other hand, the coffee produced in the State of Oaxaca offers interesting varieties that do not necessarily require blending, since they present a balanced acidity, complex aroma and notes from chocolate to citrus and in certain areas the coffee adopts a very peculiar hazelnut color, noticeable in the cup of coffee.

Finally, the State of Puebla is distinguished by producing coffee in the Northern region, where distinctive climatic characteristics prevail that favor its good quality and the production of organic coffee -it has 688 registered varieties, therefore a great diversity of sensory profiles can be found.
